Indian Diet Plan to manage Heart diseases
Meal Plan for Heart Patients, Featuring South Indian Dishes
Early Morning (7:00 AM)
•1 teaspoon soaked fenugreek (methi seeds) / 1 crushed garlic clove
•1 glass lukewarm water
Breakfast (8:00 AM)
• 2 small vegetable oats dosa / 2 ragi idlis
• 2 egg whites / 1 cup sambhar
• 1 cup coffee / tea made with skim milk (less sugar)
Mid Morning Snack (11:00 AM)
• 1 medium size fruit: Apple / Guava / Oranges
Lunch (1:00 PM)
• 1 cup mix vegetable salad / soup
• 1 cup brown wheat vegetable pulao / 2 medium size chapatti
• 1 cup green beans curry
• 1 glass thick buttermilk / 2 pc of grilled or poached skinless chicken or fish
Note:
• Avoid salt in salad / buttermilk.
• Avoid coconut-based gravies.
• 2 piece of chicken / fish = 100 gm
• Chapatti / dosa size = 6inch diameter
Afternoon Snack (4:00PM)
• 1 cup green tea without sugar
• 1 cup steamed sprouts / 5-6 soaked almonds + 3 walnuts
Note: If hungry in between - Have a glass sabja water (1 tsp sabja seeds + water)
Dinner (8:00 PM)
• 1 cup mix vegetable salad / soup
• 2 medium size multigrain chapatti
• 1 cup cooked dhal / drumstick sambhar
• 1 cup spinach keerai thoran.
Bed Time- If Hungry (10:00PM)
If hungry during bedtime - Include a warm glass of skim milk with a dash of cinnamon powder (No sugar)
Points to remember:
Do's:
- Include functional foods like almonds, walnut, flax seeds, oats, barley, garlic and green tea as they can improve the good cholesterol levels.
- Recommended oil consumption for a person with heart disease is half a litre per month. This equals three teaspoons of oil per day.
- No single oil is ideal, combining various oils is recommended e.g. oil rich in MUFA like Mustard oil, peanut oil, olive oil can be taken in combination with sunflower oil, rice bran oil that has higher PUFA content.
- Ghee can be taken in moderation. One teaspoon of ghee per day is safe to be consumed for heart patients. You can swap a teaspoon of oil with ghee.
- Keep salt intake to less than one teaspoon.
- Include fatty fish like Tuna, Sardine, India salmon (Rawas) and Rohu twice weekly.
- If you are a non-vegetarian, consume non-fried eggs and lean portions of chicken like chicken breast.
- Whole grains, legumes, seasonal vegetables and fruits are beneficial as they are rich in fibre.
- Include skim (low fat) milk products.
- Avoid sitting for long hours and include physical activity as a part of your daily routine.
Don'ts:
- Avoid red meat, organ meats, and shellfish as they are rich in cholesterol.
- Avoid maida-based food items.
- Avoid use of coconut in curries. Use tomato gravy instead.
- Avoid high salty food items like pappad/ appalam, pickle, salted chips, wafers etc.
- Avoid consumption of foods cooked with reheated oil.
- Avoid Heavy oily foods, foods high in cream and processed cheese.
- Avoid saturated fat such as palm oil, butter and margarine.
